Greenpoint Buildings: Rowhouses, New Towers, and Everything Between<\/h2>\n

Greenpoint’s building stock tells two distinct stories. The interior blocks \u2014 Nassau Avenue, Manhattan Avenue, and the side streets that make up the neighborhood’s core \u2014 are lined with attached rowhouses and mid-rise apartment buildings built in the early 1900s. These buildings almost universally have plaster walls. The waterfront, meanwhile, has seen rapid new development over the past decade, with glass-and-steel residential towers featuring drywall and concrete construction.<\/p>\n

Plaster walls<\/strong> are the standard in Greenpoint’s pre-war rowhouses and apartment buildings. If you’re in the older part of the neighborhood \u2014 anywhere on the interior blocks east of Manhattan Avenue \u2014 plaster is almost certainly what’s inside your walls. We work in Greenpoint plaster constantly and handle it the same as we do throughout Brooklyn: right technique, right anchors, no cracking.<\/p>\n

Drywall and concrete<\/strong> are common in Greenpoint’s newer waterfront towers. Concrete-backed walls require masonry anchors and a hammer drill, which we bring to every job. What We Check Before We Drill \u2014 Every Time<\/h2>\n

In Greenpoint’s pre-war rowhouses, walls can have unexpected brick backing near party walls and at structural column locations. In buildings that have been subdivided or renovated over the decades, stud spacing can be inconsistent. We check wall composition and stud layout before drilling. In the newer towers, we confirm whether the wall is concrete-backed or true drywall before selecting anchors.<\/p>\n
