Tribeca and SoHo Buildings: Cast-Iron Lofts and Converted Warehouses

Tribeca and SoHo’s residential buildings are almost entirely conversions — former industrial and commercial buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries that have been transformed into some of New York’s most sought-after loft spaces. The structural fabric of these buildings is cast iron, heavy timber, and brick masonry — none of which behaves like modern drywall construction.

Exposed brick walls are the signature feature of Tribeca and SoHo lofts, and they’re one of the most common TV mounting surfaces we work with in these neighborhoods. Brick requires masonry anchors and a hammer drill, which we bring to every job. The technique matters: drilling into the mortar joint versus the brick face, selecting the right anchor for the brick type, and making sure the installation is visually clean on a wall that’s meant to be seen. We do this well.

Concrete columns and walls are present in most of these buildings — either original poured concrete or concrete block used in later construction phases. Concrete mounting requires the same masonry equipment as brick, with different anchor selection. We carry both and choose based on the specific wall.

Drywall partitions are common in the interior of these lofts where rooms have been defined within the open floor plan. These are often built on steel-stud framing, which requires specific anchoring technique different from wood-stud construction.

Tribeca and SoHo co-ops and condo buildings are among the most formal in the city when it comes to contractor documentation. We carry a Certificate of Insurance and name your building or board as an additional insured. We know how to work within the access protocols of these buildings — service entrances, building manager coordination, elevator scheduling for larger TVs.

What We Check Before We Drill — Every Time

In Tribeca and SoHo lofts, the wall composition can vary significantly even within a single apartment — from original brick at the perimeter to concrete columns to steel-stud drywall partitions added during renovation. We assess each wall individually before drilling. We also check for the plumbing and conduit configurations common in these century-old buildings, which don’t follow modern predictable patterns.

Large TVs — 75″ and above — are common in Tribeca loft spaces, and a large TV on an exposed brick wall requires careful mount selection and anchor placement. We take the time to get this right.
