The Job Where Nothing Fit: How We Fixed a TV Mount When the Screws Were Wrong
We were hired to mount a TV. Straightforward job, Manhattan apartment, client had already purchased the mount. We arrived, unpacked the mount, pulled out the hardware kit, and immediately saw the problem: the screws that came with the mount kit were the wrong thread size and the wrong length for the TV’s VESA pattern. Not close. Not almost right. Just wrong.
We carry over 3 pounds of spare hardware in the van. Screws, bolts, toggle bolts, anchors, adapters, spacers. We pulled out the parts organizer and started checking sizes. None of them fit the mount’s screw holes. The mount had an unusual thread size that didn’t match any standard VESA bolt we carry.
What the Problem Actually Was
The TV manufacturer’s mount kit had a spec mismatch. The mount itself was designed for a standard M8 VESA bolt, but the screw holes on the mounting plate had been drilled slightly undersized from the factory, making them too tight for M8 hardware and too large for M6. It’s not a common problem, but it happens. Off-brand mounts and aftermarket kits occasionally have manufacturing tolerances that don’t align with the standard they claim to follow.
In a perfect world, we call the client, explain the issue, order the right hardware, and come back in a few days. But the client had movers coming that afternoon and needed the TV off the floor and mounted before they arrived. Rescheduling wasn’t an option they could absorb.
What We Did Instead
We drilled out the mount’s screw holes to the next standard size, M8, which is what the TV’s VESA pattern was designed to accept. The mount material was heavy-gauge steel. We used the right bit, took our time, and brought the holes to the correct diameter without compromising the structural integrity of the mounting plate.
We then matched standard M8 bolts from our stock, confirmed the thread pitch, and completed the installation. The mount went up, we load-tested it before we left, and the TV was on the wall before the movers showed up.
That’s not a repair we’d recommend doing casually. Drilling out hardware holes on a load-bearing mount requires knowing what you’re doing, using the right tools, and understanding when the modification compromises structural integrity versus when it doesn’t. In this case, the hole enlargement was minor and the bolt engagement was sufficient. We knew that before we started.

Hardware mismatches, unexpected wall conditions, buildings that won’t let you bring a ladder up to a certain floor, elevators that are too small for the mount box. Something almost always comes up.
