The waterfront developments along the Hudson — Newport, Exchange Place, Paulus Hook, and the Grove Street corridor — are mostly post-2000 construction. That means standard drywall framing in the residential units, with poured concrete in structural walls, columns, and between floors. Standard stud-mounting works cleanly in most units. Concrete anchors handle anything hitting a structural wall or column. We carry both setups to every Jersey City job because it’s common to encounter both wall types in the same apartment.
The Heights, Bergen-Lafayette, and parts of Downtown Jersey City have a substantial stock of pre-war brownstones and row houses. These buildings typically have plaster over wood lath walls — not drywall. Plaster looks nearly identical to drywall but behaves completely differently when you drill into it.
Plaster walls cause stud finders to misread — the wood lath behind the plaster creates a continuous signal that masks where the actual studs are. Drilling with standard drywall technique can crack the plaster surface. Standard drywall anchors can pull out under the weight of a TV. We use anchors and methods designed for plaster walls, with no visible cracking or damage to the surrounding surface.
Brick walls are common throughout older Jersey City buildings — exposed brick in some units, brick party walls between units, and brick exterior walls. Brick requires masonry anchors and a hammer drill. We bring that equipment to every Jersey City job because a significant percentage of the older buildings here need it.
We map before we drill. Before anything goes into the wall, we work out exactly where the mount, cables, and any wall penetrations will go.
