TV Mounting in Park Slope, Brooklyn

Park Slope brownstones are some of the most beautiful apartments in New York — and their walls are a serious workout. Plaster over wood lath is the near-universal wall type in pre-war brownstone buildings, with brick making up party walls, fireplace surrounds, and exterior walls. We’ve mounted TVs in dozens of Park Slope apartments and know exactly what anchors work in which walls, how to avoid cracking plaster, and how to leave the space looking better than we found it. Flat rate, fully insured, same-day and next-day availability.

Pre-War Brownstone Walls Are Plaster, Not Drywall

The overwhelming majority of Park Slope’s housing stock was built between 1880 and 1940 — which means plaster over wood lath is the default, not the exception. If you’ve lived in your apartment for years without trying to hang anything heavy, you may not have encountered this yet. But the moment you try to mount a TV using standard drywall anchors, you’ll find out fast.

Plaster walls are denser and more brittle than drywall. Stud finders frequently misread them because the wood lath behind the plaster creates a confusing signal pattern — a stud finder will often beep continuously across a plaster wall regardless of where studs actually are. More importantly, the wrong drilling technique can crack the plaster surface, and standard drywall anchors can pull out under the weight of a TV. We use anchors and techniques specifically designed for plaster — your mount is solid, and the wall around it stays intact.

Brick walls are the other constant in Park Slope brownstones. Party walls between units are typically solid brick. Fireplace surrounds are brick. Exterior walls are brick. If you want a TV or shelving on any of these surfaces, it requires masonry anchors and a hammer drill. We bring both to every Park Slope job. Mounting a TV above a brick fireplace is one of our most common installations in this neighborhood — we do it cleanly and anchor it properly.

A/C installations in brownstones are a specialty here. Park Slope’s pre-war buildings typically have plaster or brick surrounding window openings. Installing a window unit into a brownstone often means anchoring the A/C bracket into a plaster or brick window surround, not just a clean drywall opening. We handle the full bracket installation and anchor it into the surrounding masonry or plaster correctly — so the unit is actually secured, not just balanced.

Co-ops and condos are common throughout Park Slope — many brownstone buildings have been converted to co-ops. Most require a COI before contractors can work. We’re fully insured and can provide a Certificate of Insurance naming your building or management company as an additional insured. Email requirements to isaac@pictureperfectmounting.com.

What We Check Before We Drill — Every Time

Park Slope brownstones look solid, and structurally they are — but the interior partition walls in subdivided brownstone apartments can be surprisingly thin, especially in units carved out of older floor-through conversions. We check for this before we drill. Thin partitions need specific anchor types and placement to hold securely. And in a brownstone with plaster walls, you also need to account for the lath pattern — brick backing can appear behind plaster at party walls and fireplace surrounds, sometimes where you least expect it.

We know how to work with co-op and brownstone building requirements. Most converted brownstone buildings in Park Slope have a super or building manager who needs to sign off before contractor work, and co-op boards often require a COI naming the building as an additional insured. We handle that. Same-day COI requests, service elevator scheduling, concierge check-ins — none of that becomes the client’s problem.

We map before we drill. Before anything goes into the wall, we plan exactly where the mount, cables, and any penetrations will go — and we check for pipes, electrical, and structural elements specific to this building type. Pre-war brownstones were plumbed and wired decades ago, and those runs don’t always follow the logic you’d expect. We know what’s there before we drill.

Common Questions from Park Slope Customers

My walls are plaster — how do I know the mount will hold?

Plaster installs are our bread and butter in Park Slope. We use anchors specifically designed for plaster walls in pre-war buildings — the mount ends up solid, the surrounding wall stays clean, and the installation meets the same load rating as a stud mount in drywall. We’ve done this in dozens of Park Slope apartments.

Can you mount a TV above my brick fireplace?

Yes, and it’s one of our most requested installs in Park Slope. Brick fireplace surrounds require masonry anchors and a hammer drill — we bring both. One note: we always talk through viewing angle with customers first, since high placement can cause neck strain over time. If you want to go above the fireplace, we’ll do it right.

My building is a co-op. Do you provide a COI?

Yes. We carry full liability insurance and can provide a Certificate of Insurance naming your building or management company as an additional insured. Email the building’s requirements to isaac@pictureperfectmounting.com when you book.

Can you install a gallery wall in my brownstone?

Absolutely — gallery walls in brownstone living rooms are one of our specialties. We handle the full layout, spacing calculation, leveling, and installation into plaster walls. We can work with art you already have or advise on sizing and arrangement.

Do you install window A/C units?

Yes. Brownstone window openings often have plaster or brick surrounds that require the bracket to be anchored into masonry — we handle the full installation including the bracket work, not just dropping the unit in.
