We were hired by Hillary Wallace Design (@hillarywallacedesign on Instagram) to mount over 100 ceramic shelves across a project in New York City. It was the kind of job that looks simple on paper and reveals its complexity the moment you start counting units, mapping walls, and thinking about what happens when you drop a ceramic shelf from six feet up.

We’ve mounted thousands of shelves across NYC apartments, but this one stood out. Here’s what made it different, and what interior designers should know when they’re sourcing an installation partner for a high-volume project.

What Made This Different From a Standard Shelf Job

Volume changes everything. A single shelf installation is a 20-minute job. One hundred shelves across a project is a logistics problem. You’re thinking about staging, sequencing, avoiding damage during transit and handling, and making sure every bracket lands level on the first try because you don’t get many second chances with ceramic.

Ceramic shelves are heavier than they look and completely unforgiving if you drop them. We handled every piece with two hands and kept them flat during transport. We also mapped the walls before we started drilling, because with 100+ mounting points, any pattern error compounds. One shelf off by a quarter inch is barely noticeable. Fifty shelves off by a quarter inch is a visible problem across the whole space.

Weight distribution at scale also matters in ways it doesn’t on a single installation. We confirmed wall anchoring points for every unit, used appropriate hardware for the substrate on each wall, and load-tested as we went rather than waiting until the end. The goal was zero callbacks.

What Interior Designers Need From an Installation Partner

We work with interior designers and design firms in NYC regularly, and the requirements are consistent: you need a team that shows up when they say they will, handles product like they paid for it themselves, carries proper insurance, and doesn’t make your client’s home a job site any longer than necessary.

For projects like this one, a Certificate of Insurance (COI) is almost always required by the building. We can provide COI within 1-2 business days for most NYC buildings, including naming specific additional insureds. That’s a standard part of how we work with design clients, not something that requires a special request.

Reliability matters as much as skill. Design project timelines are tight and layered. If installation falls behind, everything downstream moves. We show up on time, complete the scope as quoted, and flag anything unexpected before we start drilling, not after.

We also don’t damage product. That sounds obvious, but it’s worth saying: we’ve seen what happens when a shelf installer treats ceramic like drywall. We don’t.
